  • the value in a 1939 N is whether or not it retains all of the unique features these first year tractors had. I see it has at least one smooth rear hub, and it has the left/right same brake pedal. But it also has 28 inch rear tyres, which weren't originally fitted in 1939. Does it have the small generator and the long-necked intake manifold? Is the key on the right side of the dash with a starter button on the left above a red charging light? Is it missing the neutral safety switch and are the fenders double ribbed? Does it have a snap in battery cover, or is it hinged? Is the left lift arm a two-piece unit and does it have a cast iron pto cover? Are the front axle spindle grease zerks facing forward? Does the aluminum trans cover have a dipstick, or not( could be either in '39)? All of these features can be restored if later parts were added, but they do have a cumulative effect on value. A correct grille will cost you 250.oo to replace with a reproduction copy, and a original style 4 spoke steering wheel (same as used in the ford trucks of that era) will set you back 80 bucks, but the chrome center cap that is available for it looks like a 5 year old did the chrome plating! You do have a real advantage in that these and most other parts are still available- not something restorers of other tractor makes can say.... Value as it sits? If it runs good, the hydraulics work, the rear end is quiet and it has a readable serial number, maybe 2-2.5k. If it has an aluminum hood and doglegs, ad 8k to that! Fully restored 39n's show up with prices anywhere from 30k (low serial number, aluminum hood, ect) to 4k for a decent late 39 with all the correct features on it.

  • Oh, and those front wheel/hubs and tyres are off of a car. The original wide spaced bolt pattern hubs it should have would be sporting a set of Skinny Firestone 4 x 19" single-ribbed tyres. The Sherman auxiliary trans helps the value a few hundred-or hurts it- depending on how you feel about them.....

  • I have the steel hood it was manufactured with however, not the aluminium grill both rear axles an alternator, forward facing grease fittings on the king pins, chromed knobs after market snap in battery cover. Transmission dip stick located on the left side by the filler cap chrome knobs I have the pictures of this tracto on my facebook under Jerry Leibrant in my album 1939 Ford 9N restoration
